Birchbox: July 2014 and August 2014

It’s been a long time since I got a Birchbox! I get the sense that this particular box has fallen out of favor as the subscription box market has gotten more saturated. People seem to prefer Ipsy these days? Anyway, I ordered one box in late June, hoping the July box would get here just in time for my NYC trip so maybe I could have some useful travel sized samples. Sadly, it arrived at my doorstep a few hours after I’d left for the airport! Oh well!

I had quickly cancelled my subscription to avoid being charged for a second box, since I really only wanted the one for traveling. So imagine my surprise when I got a charge! I shrugged it off, but was delighted to receive an e-mail stating that they had charged me by mistake, and that even though the August box had already shipped, they would refund my money. Well ok then!

Here’s what was in my July box:

I love the LAQA & Co. sheer lip lube pencil. The coral color goes on sheer and provides both moisture and color, but I do find if I have dry lips at all it looks pretty bad. I also like the Joie perfume. I know people hate getting fragrance in their boxes but I love it! I never ever buy fragrance because it’s so expensive, so I love getting these samples. They last a long time! I haven’t tried the anti-wrinkle serum, the Egyptian Magic skin cream, or the Davines hair products yet, but I have to say I’m quite pleased with the size of the shampoo! Saving it for future travel! Oh there was also a chocolate square, but since I was in New York I told my mom to open the box and eat it so it didn’t end up tasting like perfume or shampoo.

Here’s the August box:

Yay surprise free box! I really love the Cynthia Rowley eyeliner, even though it’s silver. That’s a little out there for me! But seriously it goes on so easily, I’m sold. Through reviewing the samples I got I had $10 of credit, so I just paid $6 (free shipping!) to order this product in a more neutral color (charcoal). I also enjoy the Naobay lotion. I’m not sure what’s supposed to be special about it, but it feels nice and smells like grapefruit I think so I like it. I love the smell of the shower gel but the foil sample was difficult to use so I didn’t get a great feel for the product. The dry shampoo is a big sample but I just don’t like dry shampoo. Haven’t tried the eye cream yet, I’m just not into it even though I know at 28 I need to be. I’m sure it’s wonderful.

Overall these are good boxes. Good size samples, good variety, nothing that made me say WTF. Birchbox win! If you want to get your own please consider using my link so I can get credit. :)

Birchbox: January, February, and March 2013

I’ve decided to cancel my Birchbox subscription to save some money. It’s not that I didn’t enjoy my boxes, because I really did! It’s just that Birchbox provided me with so many samples that I felt I’d finally settled in to a beauty routine I was comfortable with. I still have some holes to fill in (namely a really good concealer) but overall, I’m good with what I’ve got. In case you are curious, here’s what I got in my last three boxes.

January 2013
bbcollage3 1. theBalm® cosmetics Hot Mama Shadow & Blush All-in-One. 2. LA FRESH® Eco Beauty Waterproof Makeup Remover. 3. Embryolisse Lait-Crème Concentrè (24-Hour Miracle Cream). 4. DDF® Acne Control Treatment. 5. Aerie Shimmer Fragrance

February 2013
bbcollage2 1. Beauty Protector Protect & Detangle. 2. Color Club Fiesta Collection Nail Polish in Cactus. 3. Dr. Jart+ Black Label Detox BB Beauty Balm. 4. Juicy Couture Couture La La 3.4oz. 5. Ghirardelli Milk & Caramel Square.

March 2013
bbcollage1 1. Benefit Benetint. 2. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour® Cream Skin Protectant. 3. Madewell for Birchbox Nail Emery Board. 4. Stella Cadente Miss Me Discrete? Eau de Toilette. 5. twistband™ Headband. 6. Whish Shave Crave.

I’m not going to review each item like I normally do because that would take forever. My favorites: the Embryolisse moisturizer, the DDF acne treatment, the Dr. Jart BB cream, and the chocolate (duh). Least favorites: Color Club polish, Whish shave cream, and Benetint.

Birchbox: December 2012

In the midst of my end-of-semester and animal-in-my-wall and Christmas-shopping stress, I forgot to post about my Birchbox! Luckily I hadn’t thrown away any packaging yet, but I was too lazy to take a proper picture. I hope this is the biggest disappointment of your day!

This month’s box was a really big bummer for me. Lately my boxes have been pretty good, with at least one or two products I was in love with. This month, no such luck.

1. per-fékt Beauty Lash Perfection Gel (Full Size, $28.50 for .45 fl oz)
This is perhaps the biggest disappointment in my box, not because the product is bad, but because I’d already gotten it in an earlier box. I don’t really love the product. It’s just mascara, though it claims to do all this great stuff for my lashes. I don’t know, I didn’t notice. Anyway, true to Birchbox’s excellent customer service, I received 100 points ($10) as a “sorry”.

2. Juicy Couture by Juicy Couture (Full Size, $90 for 2.4 oz)
I don’t like this scent. To me it smells like soap. My friend got it in her box and her boyfriend said it smells like his mom. My age is listed in my style profile, so why send me a fragrance that smells like moms?

3. Number 4 Clarifying Shampoo (Full Size, $32 for 250 ml)
I haven’t used this yet, but I’m sure I will like it. All I really care about in shampoo is that it cleans my hair and smells good. This smells good, and I am confident in its cleaning abilities. However, I wasn’t really excited about it because it does not claim to do anything I really need. It doesn’t say it smooths or prevents breakage or anything like that. Just shampoo.

4. Frownies Eye Gels (Full Size, $29.95 for a set of three)
I haven’t tried this one yet either, but I’m not optimistic. A while ago Birchbox sent me a face mask that seems similar to this and I hated it. It felt so slippery and gross on my face. I assume these will be similar. Also I hate that it says it eliminates wrinkles. Again, it says my age on my profile. Wrinkles are not an issue, thank YOU!

5. Tea Forté Skin-Smart Teas (Full Size, $6 for 16 bags)
Again, haven’t tried them yet. But it’s tea, and I like tea. Interesting flavors, and it claims to improve your skin? Sure, why not! This is the “lifestyle extra” so I’m always happy when it’s something I will actually eat/drink/use.

Also included was a gift card for $50 off a Rent The Runway rental. I’ve never used Rent The Runway before. Thoughts?

Anyway, I’m sure this Birchbox was not a huge selling point for you, but if you’re ready to subscribe for yourself, please use my link so that I can get points! Points turn into money I can use towards full-size products!

Birchbox: November 2012

I threw away the packaging before I could take a great picture of this box, oops! But I did get some good stuff!

1. Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme Petite Cologne Absolue (Full Size, $75 for 30 ml)
I like the scent but I worry it may be a bit overpowering.

2. Lulu Organics® Lavender + Clary Sage Hair Powder (Full Size, $30 for 4 oz)
I wash my hair daily. I know you aren’t supposed to do that, but I do it anyway. The thought of not washing my hair in order to try this sample makes me cringe, but I love the smell of lavender and sage so I want to try it! Maybe someday when I’m not going anywhere in public…

3. ModelCo FIBRE LASHXTEND Lengthening Mascara (Full Size, $24)
First of all, I just love getting full size products in my Birchbox! I already have a mascara I love, but this one could give it a run for its money! I really like it!

4. Miracle Skin Transformer™ Vanish Instant Imperfection Corrector (Full Size, $58)
It took me a minute to figure out what exactly this product is, but basically it’s a skin serum and primer in one. I put it on a little dark spot on my chin and it went on so smooth! I forgot to put it on under my makeup this morning, but I can’t wait to try it as a primer. I might be in love.

5. Chuao Chocolatier Assorted ChocoPod (Full Size, $7.95 for 7 bars)
Yall, I ate this so fast! My sample was the “potato chip” flavor which was a milk chocolate bar with potato chip crumbles blended in. I love me some sweet and salty, so this was perfect for me. And I am so glad Birchbox finally sent me chocolate. It helps me forgive the February box in which all my friends got chocolate and I got mouthwash. Happy Valentine’s Day to me?

This was a pretty good box for me! A full-size item AND chocolate? Yes please. I am getting a little tired of fragrance samples, and the dry shampoo is a little scary, but hey Birchbox is about trying new things right? Ready to try it out? Birchbox: October 2012

The October 2012 Birchbox could have been either a Goop sponsored box, or a Transformations themed box. Everyone else seemed to have gotten an e-mail asking which box they preferred, but I never did and I ended up with the Transformations box. Fine by me. I did not get as many items as I often do, but the items I got seem more luxurious than many of my other boxes. Which is funny, because the full size items are less expensive. Here’s what I got:

1. BENTA BERRY G-1 Moisturizing Face Cream (Full Size, $22 for 30 ml)
This little box had two identical samples in it, which was a fun surprise! I’ve used this a couple of times and it goes on a little sticky but doesn’t feel that way for long. I would be more likely to buy it if I wasn’t so happy with my Clinique moisturizing gel.

2. theBalm® cosmetics Mary-Lou Manizer (Full Size, $24 for 8.5 g)
Cute packaging and it goes on nicely, but I don’t feel like it stays on very well. Maybe I’m doing it wrong? Also I wish it came with a tool to apply it.

3. Mox Botanicals Lip Butter (Full Size, $16 for .2 ml)
Good taste and very moisturizing for my lips! I wouldn’t pay $16 for it though…

4. Harvey Prince Hello (Full Size, $55 for 50 ml)
I was annoyed to see yet another fragrance, since I’m really not much of a perfume person. But I think this is a nice scent, not overpowering but also seems to fade as the day goes on.

5. LUNA Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter (Full Size, $14.95 for 12)
This was my lifestyle extra, and I haven’t eaten it yet. Seems like a full size bar though so that’s nice. And at least I didn’t get the lemon flavor, gross.

Honestly, if you did the break-down of how much money each sample size was worth, this would be one of my worst valued boxes. However, this is also probably the first box where I am excited about and will actually use each sample. I also like this range of sample because if I actually do really like an item, it is not outrageous for me to consider purchasing it in the future.

Birchbox’s value overall is excellent. I get a surprise in my mailbox every month, I get to try new brands and products, and I get to earn points just buy reviewing, shopping, and referring. With those points I can buy full-size items of my favorite samples! Ready to get on board? Here’s my referral link!

Birchbox: Catching Up

My dear friend Rebecca gave me the gift of Birchbox last Christmas. The gift included three months of high-end beauty product samples, and after one month of not renewing the subscription I decided I missed it too much and subscribed! It’s only $10 a month and it’s such a fun surprise in my mailbox.

Every time you review a product you get 10 points, and every time you refer a friend you get 50 points, and you get 1 point for every dollar you spend. Once you get 100 points (which happens pretty quickly), it turns into $10 you can use on full-size products in the Birchbox store! So you get fun samples and the ability to get free full-size items! Score.

I’m going to share what I get in my Birchbox each month when I get it. For now, here’s a list of everything I’ve gotten so far. I linked each to the Birchbox store, and I put stars by my favorite items! (PS: click here to sign up!)
